When you hear the term ‘Bollywood,’ what comes to mind? Romantic musicals? Perhaps really long movies? In most cases, this is true! Relationships, family dynamics, music, singing, and dancing are integral components of Bollywood, providing a lens for better understanding shifts in Indian culture and society. In this course, our primary focus will be on popular Bollywood films and related media in Post- Independent India. In a truly ‘masala’ fashion, topics will encompass interdisciplinary discussions on politics, economy, religion, identity, gender, society, culture, and ‘Bombay cinema.’ We will inquire about the ways in which particular tastes, desires, and sentiments become popular, and productive of dominant, though constantly shifting, norms and normativities. My goal is to make this course engaging, interesting, and enjoyable. No prior knowledge of Bollywood is required for this course. A strong emphasis will be placed on discussion, aiming for a lively and intellectually stimulating experience. Welcome this experience with an open mind!
